One of the ‘World’s Safest Airlines’, Etihad is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring it is also safe for the environment. In order to reach the aviation industry’s goal of net zero carbon emissions, Etihad Airline Partners with Twelve (carbon transformation company) to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) made from CO2 and renewable energy.
As there has been an increase in demand for sustainable aviation fuel from many top airlines, Etihad also seeks to utilize it. The airline aims to achieve the goal of net zero emissions by the year 2050. It plans to make fuel from waste and divert approximately 75% of waste from landfills by 2025. Through this partnership, Etihad will utilize Twelve’s low-carbon aviation fuel to support its aviation strategy.
How will Etihad and Twelve’s partnership work?
Etihad Airways will accelerate the production and use of E-Jet fuel that has been developed by Twelve. They will collaborate together to demonstrate an international flight using this fuel and expand the impact of sustainable aviation fuel on the aviation industry. This will likely reduce emissions by Etihad’s existing aircraft fleet by up to 90%.
What is E-Jet fuel?
E-jet is a fossil-free jet fuel that is made from electrified CO2. It is low in carbon and is made by a unique power-to-power liquid process. E-jet is produced using Twelve’s special carbon transformation technology and a proprietary catalyst that electrifies carbon dioxide and water in an electrochemical reactor. This will create a synthesis gas, CO + H2, which is then refined into carbon-neutral jet fuel.
Apart from renewable fuel, various airlines have been testing eVTOLs as an eco-friendly alternative. After Blade and BETA successfully completed a test flight in New York earlier this year, Archer is also developing its own eVTOL called Midnight. It has partnered with United Airlines and will likely start tests this summer. The company aims to get a Type Certification from the FAA in late 2024 and start initial operations between 2024 and 2028.
As Etihad airline partners with Twelve, the aviation industry awaits yet another revolutionizing collaboration that will ensure a sustainable future. What are your thoughts on this new development? Comment below and let us know.
